Before a prospect ever replies to your proposal or books a call, they do something you never see. They open a browser and check you out. In roughly six minutes across Google, LinkedIn, and increasingly an AI chatbot, they decide whether you are a safe bet or a quiet risk. Most founders have never once audited what those six minutes actually reveal.
The Meeting Before the Meeting
The first real sales meeting now happens without you in the room. By the time someone agrees to talk, they have already formed an opinion based on what they found. If the search reassured them, the call is a formality. If it raised doubts, you are spending the first ten minutes clawing back credibility you did not know you had lost. Authority is simply the state of having already answered the buyer’s silent question — “can I trust this person?” — before they ask it.
What the Six-Minute Search Actually Surfaces
Three surfaces do most of the deciding. Google tells them whether you exist beyond your own website — features, mentions, a consistent name. LinkedIn tells them whether you are active and endorsed, or dormant with a headline from three roles ago. And AI engines increasingly tell them who to trust in your category; if you are never named when a buyer asks a chatbot “who is the best PR consultant in Dubai,” you are invisible in the exact moment of intent. None of these are vanity. They are the pre-qualification round.
The Silent Disqualifiers
Buyers rarely tell you why they went cold, so the disqualifiers stay invisible. A thin footprint where nothing but your own marketing shows up. An outdated profile that contradicts how you now describe yourself. Zero third-party validation, so every claim is self-issued. Or a story that shifts from your site to your LinkedIn to your proposal, forcing the buyer to guess which version is real. Any one of these plants a seed of doubt, and doubt is enough to make a busy prospect choose the safer-looking competitor.
Run Your Own Authority Audit
Open an incognito window and search your own name plus your niche, the way a stranger would. Write down exactly what the first page shows, in order. Do the same on LinkedIn, reading your profile as a skeptical buyer rather than a proud owner. Then ask an AI assistant to recommend someone for the work you do, and see whether your name ever appears. The gap between what you found and what you wish they had found is your entire authority to-do list — and it is usually fixable within weeks, not years.
Authority Is Built on Purpose, Not by Accident
The founders who win the six-minute search did not get lucky. They deliberately placed consistent, credible signals everywhere a buyer looks, and let them compound over time. This is the same dynamic I unpack in The Authority Gap: Why the Best Professional in Your City Isn’t the One Getting Chosen. Being excellent at your craft is table stakes; being visibly, verifiably excellent is what actually gets you hired.
